2009 'Aumakua Swim Results
Maluaka Beach, Makena, Maui,
Hawaii (updated 9/11/09) Aloha Swimmers, I hope you all had a great time and a great swim racing with us in Makena Bay in South Maui. In my biased opinion, this is the most beautiful race course in the world ... beautiful coral, clear clean water, not too warm or cold, mild weather, easy & safer (small) shore break, wildlife (there were report of eagle rays, turtles, fish of course, etc.) and more. There are places in the world with more varied and colorful coral, and/or more sea life, and sometimes beautiful snow covered mountain vistas in the distance ... but they're either not accessible, the water's too cold, hot, murky or dirty, the shore breaks or rip currents are dangerous, or there are more numerous & dangerous sea-life. That said, the conditions & race were a little harder this year. We had a VERY unusual morning on-shore wind that made some chop which died off ~20-30 minutes into the race to make a beautiful clear (light wind) late morning & afternoon. With the unusual conditions, we also had (unusual) a few small bits of broken off man-o-war tentacles that stung quite a few of you. Together that made the swim times a little slower than past years. One other difference ... for the first time there were more milers than 2.4 mile swimmers. Finally, Thank you swimmers ... the race was a huge success for our age group & masters club thanks to you. I've updated results (as of Thurs 9/10/09) fixing a few "arch" swimmer times, and an offset on the timing system that needed fixing but didn't effect relative positions. Please be sure to check out the THANK YOU note to all those that made this swim possible. I hope to see you all (and more) again next year. -Malcolm Cooper, Race Director 2009 ‘Aumakua Swim Results
